About Champ Baker

Champ L. Baker, III MD, earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta before going on to complete his internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Prior to joining the Hughston Clinic, Dr. Baker completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and worked on the medical staff of the Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox, and Depaul University. Dr. Baker was granted the Certificate of added Qualification in Sports Medicine in 2012 by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and re-certified in 2019. He is currently the head team physician for the Central High School Red Devils in Phenix City, AL, Pacelli High School Vikings in Columbus, GA, and the head team physician for the Columbus State University Cougars.

Dr. Baker is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. His specialties include arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine with a special interest in cartilage restoration.

Dr Baker treats all acute and chronic injuries of the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee.

Shoulder arthroscopy including rotator cuff repair, shoulder instability surgery, biceps tenotomy and tenodesis. Knee arthroscopy including meniscectomy, meniscus repair, patellar instability surgery, ACL, PCL, MCL, and Posterolateral corner repairs and reconstructions, subchondroplasty, cartilage restoration including meniscus transplants, osteochondral autograft and osteochondral allograft reconstructions. Elbow procedures include distal biceps and triceps repairs, tennis elbow surgery, and elbow arthroscopy for osteoarthritis, loose body removal, and OCD capitellum. Hip arthroscopy for labral repair and femoral acetabular impingement.

Current research activities include post operative pain management after rotator cuff repair and bracing after quadriceps tendon autograft for ACL reconstruction.
