Qualifications of Applicant: Applicant should have successfully completed an ACGME accredited orthopaedic residency program before the academic year for which the application applies. The applicant should be board certified or board eligible and able to obtain medical licensure in the states of Georgia and Alabama.
Research Opportunities: Fellows will be involved in clinical studies ongoing within the Hughston Foundation as well as offered the opportunity to explore new studies and ideas of individual professional concern. Each fellow is expected to have a project completed with a publishable manuscript by the end of the fellowship year. The results of this project will be presented by the fellow to the Hughston faculty and staff at the annual Hughston Fellows Research Presentations.
Brief Description of Program: The goal of the fellowship is to provide a comprehensive educational experience in orthopaedic sports medicine. Fellows will refine skills in the management of the orthopaedic sports medicine patient, including prioritizing treatment and rehabilitation. Fellows will develop and hone surgical skills in the treatment of basic and complex knee, shoulder, hip, hand, wrist, foot, and ankle injuries. Opportunities abound to assist with providing sidelines care at local high school, college and professional sporting events. The close proximity to Fort Benning US Army Base and Maneuver Center of Excellence, which includes the US Army Infantry and Armor Schools and home to over 70,000 soldiers and civilians, allows for unique opportunities to treat injuries sustained during specialized military training.
Call responsibility as primary staff: No call is required.
Any away rotations from primary institution? No away rotations.
Meeting Opportunities: Fellows are expected to attend the AOSSM annual meeting, Southern Orthopaedic Association annual meeting, and/or other national meetings.
Licensing restrictions for International Surgeons: Must be able to obtain licensure in the State of Georgia and Alabama, and not require a visa.
Accreditation Status: ACGME Accredited.
